The state funeral will honour Mr Hughes’ life, extraordinary service to Australia and his enduring contribution to the South Australian community as one of the state’s most distinguished Second World War veterans.

In lieu of flowers, the family has kindly requested that individuals and organisations wishing to honour Mr Hughes, to donate to Legacy. Donation envelopes will also be available at the funeral.

Members of the public are welcome to attend and pay their respects. Please register to attend.

About Mr Angas Hughes

Born in Adelaide, Mr Hughes enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force on his 18th birthday and served with the No. 467 Squadron during World War II, completing 31 operations as a bomb aimer and navigator with Bomber Command.

In September 1944 Mr Hughes' Lancaster aircraft was shot down over Germany during his 32nd operation.

After parachuting to safety, he evaded capture for three days before being taken prisoner and spent seven months in a German prisoner of war camp.

Despite enduring extraordinary hardship, including a 200-kilometre forced march through Europe in the depths of winter, Mr Hughes remained known for his humility, optimism and good humour.

Mr Hughes remained an active and respected member of the veteran community throughout his life. As recently as May this year during a major defence conference, he shared his wartime experiences with government representatives, defence industry leaders and defence personnel.
