Phase 6 of the D3 journey, closing your challenge

At the conclusion of the formal parts of your challenge, consider doing the following:

  • update your challenge website with the winners
  • send thank you notes/emails to those involved
  • tidy up the challenge records (e.g. contact lists, internal documentation, event resources)
  • collect feedback from competitors and participants (e.g. via an online survey)
  • produce an End of Project Report for stakeholders (if required)
  • develop an engagement plan for keeping in touch with winners going forward.

Providing seed funds to challenge winners

The challenge owner will need to provide winning competitors with an agreement document before the Validating the business concept phase starts.

The agreement document should:

  • outline the deliverables outlined in the competitor’s Pitch Brief and Pitch
  • be signed off by both parties
  • outline payment details.

South Australian Government agencies can provide the seed funds as a grant. A generic grant agreement template is available upon request. If issued as a grant, winning competitors must complete an acquittal report (forms part of the agreement template) at the end of the validation period, demonstrating how the funds were spent as part of the grant agreement.

Briefing winners on expectations

During the validating the business concept phase (four to six weeks, as defined by the challenge owner) the winning competitors will be working on more research and customer testing to validate their business concept.

Make sure the winning competitor is clear on the deliverables agreed. Regular meetings should be held with the competitors to maintain communication, keep track of progress, and discuss any support required.

The challenge owner can engage external service providers to help winning competitors with start-up and business building coaching services, or human-centred co-design coaching services if required.

After the seed fund agreement has been signed, the challenge owner will need to create plans to support the winners through the validating the business concept phase and beyond.

Collecting and sharing feedback

Seeking feedback after each challenge is recommended. Examples of questions you may use are:

  • What worked well?
  • What didn't work well?
  • What could be improved?
