The Department of the Premier and Cabinet celebrates its diverse workforce and values it as a source of strength to deliver programs that realise the government’s vision.

To serve our state we need a workforce that represents the diversity of the South Australian community.

We are committed to building an inclusive workplace where all people feel valued, are empowered to bring their full, authentic selves to work and have equal access to opportunities that help them reach their full potential.

Diversity and Inclusion Framework

This commitment is reflected in our Diversity and Inclusion Framework 2023-25, which outlines plans for the following topics and groups:

  • Diversity and Inclusion
  • Age inclusive employment
  • Culturally and linguistically diverse
  • First Nations employment
  • Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer, asexual, agender and aromatic + (LGBTIQA+) inclusion.

This framework complements and supports plans developed independently under separate policy or legislative requirements, including the department’s Reconciliation Action Plan, Disability Access and Inclusion Plan, and Gender Equality and Respect Action Plan.

We also have a Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Committee that listens and responds to the voices of our diverse employees.

Disability Access and Inclusion Plan

The department has a Disability Access and Inclusion Plan that sets out the actions we commit to over the next four years to improve the accessibility and inclusiveness of our facilities, services and supports.

LGBTIQA+ inclusion

The department prides itself in leading the South Australian public sector in creating an inclusive and respectful workplace for our LGBTIQA+ employees.

To enhance a culture of inclusion through staff awareness, we produced an online LGBTIQA+ awareness course for employees, a first for any Australian government department at the time. This course was re-written in 2022 with contributions from public sector employees with lived experience and LGBTIQA+ policy specialists and service providers, and is utilised by many other departments across the South Australian public sector.

Through our Gender Affirmation in the Workplace Procedure, we are committed to supporting our employees to present for work as the gender they identify with and enable them to determine how they wish to transition or affirm their gender in the workplace.

First Nations employees

The department strives to be a culturally responsive workplace and is committed to supporting our First Nation’s workforce and members of the public in every way.

Our commitment to strengthening our First Nation’s workforce is supported by our Aboriginal and Torres Straits Islander Employment Pools to give applicants priority consideration when vacancies arise.

Our First Nation’s employees are also offered:

  • Five cultural leave days each year in addition to existing leave provisions
  • An opportunity to join the department’s Nunga Network to network with other First Nation’s employees
  • Aboriginal Career Pathways program, providing individuals with access to one-on-one tailored career information and discussions
